Noren Becomes Wayne State's 10th President
Dr. Jay Noren officially became Wayne State’s 10th president at a swearing-in ceremony Aug. 1.
The Board of Governors voted unanimously May 14 to appoint Noren. The ceremony was held at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center on campus.
“I am humbled, privileged and excited to join the Wayne State family and the Detroit community as the next president of the university,” said Noren in his address at the ceremony. “I am anxious to join this engine of people power to participate in crafting an upward path to a brighter future. There is no better place in the country to energize that bright future than here at Wayne State University and Detroit, and no better time than right now.”

Get in the Game at Saginaw Valley
Ride in style on the Warrior Express - a.k.a., motorcoach - from Wayne State to Saginaw Valley State's campus, where you'll join fellow football fans for a tailgate party and Warrior football game on Saturday, Sept. 6.
Chow down, drink up and play games. Then show off your Warrior garb. The party starts at 10:30 a.m., kickoff is at noon at Wickes Memorial Stadium. After the game, catch a ride home on the Warrior Express and leave the driving to us. Game tickets are included.
The bus will pick up at two locations: Wayne State's Matthaei Athletics Complex, at 8 a.m., and the I-75/Sashabaw Road Park & Ride at 8:45 a.m.
Cost is $25 for alumni association members, $30 for non-members. If you are providing your own transportation, cost is $20.

Get Cooking With Giulio Live!
Get cooking with Giulio Live! a series of culinary adventures with Wayne State Alumni and AVI Fresh.
He’s not Emeril, but he’s the next best thing! Join campus executive chef for AVI Fresh, Giulio Fattore, as he whips up a variety of culinary masterpieces. Watch and learn, then sample his creations: a four-course Italian meal, Sweetest Day confections and a holiday-inspired brunch. The adventure continues long after you leave, as you’ll take home Giulio’s secret recipes and a special gift compliments of the alumni association and AVI Food Systems.
Each culinary adventure begins at 1 p.m. at the Towers Hall Café. Cost for each session is $58 per person. Alumni association members only. Space is limited, and reservations are required.

It’s Sweetest Day, so indulge your sweetheart – and your sweet tooth – with autumn squash soup with vanilla crème and served in an acorn squash bowl; baby green salad with pear, goat cheese, dried cherries and honey vinaigrette; Cabernet braised beef short ribs with rosemary roasted root vegetable, perfect whipped potatoes, braised red cabbage and natural jus; and apple pumpkin spice cake with cream cheese frosting and cinnamon sauce.

Celebrate Homecoming With the Alumni Association
Celebrate homecoming with the alumni association's Homecoming Pancake Tailgate on Saturday, Oct. 11.
Who wouldn’t wake up early for this? All-you-can-eat pancakes, plus fun for the whole family as you tailgate before the big game. Watch the Warriors kick some Northern Michigan Wildcat tail at noon. Games and prizes for everyone, plus a special appearance by Warrior mascot W.
The event begins at 10 a.m. in tailgate parking lot #50. Cost is $10 for members, $15 for non-members. Free for student members and kids under 13.

Hitachi Data Systems is currently recruiting in Detroit and other areas of the U.S. for entry-level sales people. The company offers training, mentoring and benefits.
Also, Flint-based Mott Community College is accepting applications for a full-time senior human resource generalist-research.

EACPHS Hosts Lecture and Reunion
The Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences invites you to attend the Martin Barr Lecture series and alumni reunion on Thursday, Sept. 11.
The Martin Barr Lecture topic, Unnatural Causes – Natural Solutions: Your Role in Eliminating Health Disparities, will be presented by Dr. Kimberlydawn Wisdom, Michigan’s first Surgeon General and president of Community Health Education and Wellness. The lecture begins at 5 p.m. at the EACPHS Auditorium.
The lecture will be followed by the Distinguished Alumni Awards and Annual Alumni Reunion. The program will recognize distinguished alumni as well as 25- and 50-year graduates of the college.
The awards reception begins at 6 p.m. and features dinner and strolling dessert throughout the state-of-the-art building.
The lecture is free. Cost for the reception is $45 per person.

SBA Golf Outing is Success
The School of Business Administration Alumni Association’s second Swing for the Students Golf Outing raised $75,000 toward future student scholarships.
The outing brought in $50,000 and an additional $25,000 was contributed by SBA Dean David Williams, who pledged to give 50 cents for every dollar raised. The event raised $25,000 in its first year. The funds have been placed in an endowment that will provide two $2,500 scholarships annually in perpetuity to graduating seniors from high schools in the city of Detroit.
More than 140 players participated and 40 local companies served as corporate sponsors. Lear Corporation served as title sponsor for the event.

WOW Hosts Term Limits Discussion
The Women of Wayne Alumni Association will present Women in Politics: Do Term Limits Help or Hurt Female Candidates? on Friday, Oct. 3.
Professor Marjorie Sarbaugh-Thompson, as well as Wayne State alumnae from the Michigan Legislature, will lead the discussion on term limits and their impact on women in the Michigan Legislature.

Attention, alumni from the class of 1958 and earlier: Reconnect with classmates, the campus community and the city with the alumni association's Golden Jubilee Reunion on Friday, Oct. 10.
Get on the bus to go on a tour that features all that’s popping up on campus and around town. Watch a vignette performance at the Hilberry Theatre and take part in a discussion with director Lavinia Hart. Then see the stars – literally – at the planetarium in Old Main. A gala reception and program follows, and alumni will be inducted into the prestigious Golden Circle. Need a ride to event? Motorcoach transportation is available from the Wayne State Oakland Center in Farmington Hills.

Commemorate 15 Years at Lecture
Celebrate Detroit with the Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Lecture Series: Detroit, a City Upon a Hill on Thursday, Nov. 13.
They called it a “city upon a hill.” In 1630, Puritan John Winthrop predicted his Massachusetts Bay Colony would be just that, and admired by all. The same can happen in Detroit. Celebrate 15 years of this award-winning lecture series with a panel of former speakers who discuss the issues and opportunities facing Detroit’s own ascension to be a city upon a hill. The series also marks the publication of Dr. Johnson’s memoir, Race and Remembrance, which will be available for purchase.
The event begins at 11 a.m. at the Spencer Partrich Auditorium, Law School. The lecture is free, but reservations are required.

Gain New Insights at FOCIS Lectures
Wayne State will host two lectures in September as part of the Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society lecture series. FOCIS is a special initiative designed to focus the university’s problem-solving resources on an eclectic range of topics important to the campus community and beyond.
Wayne State presents Vicente Fox, the internationally respected and often outspoken former president of Mexico, on Friday, Sept. 12.
