The seatbelt sign comes on during the annual Travel Preview and Reunion on Sunday, Sept. 14.

An open house at noon, followed by tour presentations at 12:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m., will have you dreaming of places to go with the alumni association. Snacks provided, too. And it's all free. Attend Residence Hall Naming Ceremony

The Wayne State University Board of Governors and President Jay Noren invite you to join them at a naming ceremony for the Leon H. Atchison Residence Hall on Friday, Sept. 12.

The building, previously South Residence Hall, will be named in honor of Leon H. Atchison, former member of Wayne State's Board of Governors.

A reception in the living room and courtyard area of the residence hall will follow the program. The Atchison family will be in attendance for the event.

Parking is available in
Structure 2 at 5150 Lodge Freeway Service Drive.

Celebrate Homecoming With the Alumni Association

Celebrate homecoming with the alumni association's Homecoming Pancake Tailgate on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Who wouldn’t wake up early for this? All-you-can-eat pancakes, plus fun for the whole family as you tailgate before the big game. Watch the Warriors kick some Northern Michigan Wildcat tail at noon. Games and prizes for everyone, plus a special appearance by Warrior mascot W.

Commemorate 15 Years at ALJUP Lecture

Celebrate Detroit with the Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Lecture Series: Detroit, a City Upon a Hill on Thursday, Nov. 13.

They called it a “city upon a hill.” In 1630, Puritan John Winthrop predicted his Massachusetts Bay Colony would be just that, and admired by all. The same can happen in Detroit. Celebrate 15 years of this award-winning lecture series with a panel of former speakers who discuss the issues and opportunities facing Detroit’s own ascension to be a city upon a hill. The series also marks the publication of Dr. Johnson’s memoir, Race and Remembrance, which will be available for purchase.

Confirmed speakers include, Graham Beal, director and CEO, Detroit Institute of Arts; David DiChiera, director general, Michigan Opera Theatre; Paul Hillegonds, senior vice president for corporate affairs, DTE Energy; Hon. Damon J. Keith, U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals; Samuel Logan, editor, Michigan Chronicle; and Cynthia Pasky, president, Strategic Staffing Solutions.

Gain New Insights at FOCIS Lectures

Wayne State will host two lectures in September as part of the Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society lecture series. FOCIS is a special initiative designed to focus the university’s problem-solving resources on an eclectic range of topics important to the campus community and beyond.

Wayne State presents Vicente Fox, the internationally respected and often outspoken former president of Mexico, on Friday, Sept. 12.

Fox will present the lecture The Promise of Globalization. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Arts Auditorium on campus. The lecture will be followed by an audience question and answer session and a book signing.

Attend the Faculty Art Exhibit

The Community Arts Gallery presents Leader of the Pack: 2008 WSU Faculty Exhibition, a sampling of work from faculty of Wayne State's Department of Art and Art History Sept. 12-Oct. 17.

An opening reception with the artists will take place from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 12. The event is free and open to the public.

Get cooking with Giulio Live! a series of culinary adventures with Wayne State Alumni and AVI Fresh. Due to popular demand, the series is now open to members and non-members.

The Women of Wayne Alumni Association will present Women in Politics: Do Term Limits Help or Hurt Female Candidates? on Friday, Oct. 3.

Farmers Market Arrives on Campus

Wayne State recently announced the arrival of the 4th Wednesday Farmers Market on campus.

The markets are scheduled for the fourth Wednesday of the month and will take place from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Cass Ave. in front of Prentis Hall.

The market will feature fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, flowers, and prepared foods produced in the region.

The 4th Wednesday Farmers Market is a project of
SEED Wayne, Sustainable Food Systems Education and Engagement in Detroit and Wayne State University. SEED is a new campus-community collaboration dedicated to building sustainable food systems on the campus of Wayne State and in Detroit neighborhoods.

The next market will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 24.

Join Us for the Golden Jubilee Reunion

Attention, alumni from the class of 1958 and earlier: Reconnect with classmates, the campus community and the city with the alumni association's Golden Jubilee Reunion on Friday, Oct. 10.

Get on the bus to go on a tour that features all that’s popping up on campus and around town. Watch a vignette performance at the Hilberry Theatre and take part in a discussion with director Lavinia Hart. Then see the stars – literally – at the planetarium in Old Main. A gala reception and program follows, and alumni will be inducted into the prestigious Golden Circle. Need a ride to event? Motorcoach transportation is available from the Wayne State Oakland Center in Farmington Hills.

College of Nursing Hosts LifeLine Awards

The Wayne State College of Nursing will present the Eighth Annual LifeLine Awards on Thursday, Sept. 25.

In addition to raising thousands of dollars for student nursing scholarships and faculty recruitment, the LifeLine Awards recognize outstanding individuals for their contributions to health care. Carolyn Clifford, anchor and health reporter at WXYZ-TV/Channel 7, returns as mistress of ceremonies.

Established in 2001, the LifeLine Awards honor those who have made a difference in health care as caregivers, administrators, and innovators or through policy changes that support quality and positive changes in health care delivery.

The event will take place at the Roostertail in Detroit. It begins with a reception and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. Dinner begins at 7:15 p.m. Cost is $175 per person.

Volunteers Needed for Mentoring Program

The Wayne County 4-H Mentoring Program is looking for volunteers to mentor at-risk kids, ages 10-17, who are at risk of dropping out of school.

The program emphasizes helping young people improve their academic performance, improve relationships with peers and adults, reduce school delinquency, and develop skills that will prepare them for successful futures in the work force.

Volunteers interested in becoming mentors are asked to make a minimum one-year commitment to the mentoring relationship. Potential mentors are required to complete an orientation program and training.

IITC Presents Lecture Series

Wayne State’s Institute of Information Technology and Culture will present a four-part lecture series highlighting anthropology entitled “Dangerous Territory: Social Research Out of Bounds.” 

The series will feature four presenters who will speak about the innovations resulting from applying social science research outside of academia. The presenters will present on various applications ranging from design and marketing to communications and warfare.

Rita Denny, Ph.D., a founding partner of Practica Group, is an anthropologist specializing in American consumer culture. She has demonstrated her work with the DIA as a case study to enlighten the role of anthropological analysis.

Enroll Your Child in Power of Dreams Music Project

Wayne State's Department of Music and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra present the Power of Dreams Strings Project, providing low-cost weekly classes in violin, viola, cello or double bass during the fall and winter terms.

Starting this fall, selected undergraduate string majors will teach violin, viola, cello and bass to small groups of 3rd-5th grade beginners. These classes will form the foundation level of the Power of Dreams program.

Classes meet in Old Main on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings and each semester culminates with a performance in the Music Box concert space at Detroit's Max M. Fisher Music Center. Cost is $150 for two 12-week semesters.

Power of Dreams classes for intermediate-level students also will meet at Wayne State, on Saturdays only.

World-renowned motivational speaker Albert Mensah will deliver the speech "Aim High" to the campus community on Thursday, Oct. 9.

Mensah rose from humble beginnings in Ghana, Africa, to become one of the top speakers in the world. In "Aim High" he describes how the action can help you achieve your dreams. EACPHS Hosts Lecture and Reunion

The Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences invites you to attend the Martin Barr Lecture series and alumni reunion on Thursday, Sept. 11.

The
Martin Barr Lecture topic, Unnatural Causes – Natural Solutions: Your Role in Eliminating Health Disparities, will be presented by Dr. Kimberlydawn Wisdom, Michigan’s first Surgeon General and president of Community Health Education and Wellness. The lecture begins at 5 p.m. at the EACPHS Auditorium.

The lecture will be followed by the
Distinguished Alumni Awards and Annual Alumni Reunion. The program will recognize distinguished alumni as well as 25- and 50-year graduates of the college.

The awards reception begins at 6 p.m. and features dinner and strolling dessert throughout the state-of-the-art building.

WDET Launches New Show

A new weekday program, "The Back Story," will air on WDET 101.9 FM and at www.wdet.org.

Veteran political reporter Quinn Klinefelter will host the daily hour-long program. Klinefelter has more than 20 years of news reporting experience and has covered local politics for WDET for the past 10 years. He regularaly reports for NPR and BBC News.

The program will air Monday-Friday at 3 p.m.
