The D-9 is Coming!
The D-9, a group of prominent Detroit-area speakers, will return to Wayne State for the 15th anniversary of the Wayne State University Alumni Association's Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives lecture series on Thursday, Nov. 13.

From a variety of perspectives, they’ll discuss the issues and opportunities facing Detroit and how it can ascend to be a “city upon a hill.” The discussion will be moderated by Craig Fahle, host of Detroit public radio station WDET’s Detroit Today.
This lecture also marks the publication of Arthur Johnson’s memoirs, Race and Remembrance, published by Wayne State University Press.
Meet Dr. Johnson beginning at 11 a.m. and purchase a copy of his book with an autographed commemorative bookplate. Alumni association members receive a 30 percent discount with membership card.

Free Alumni Tailgate this Weekend
The Warrior football team is 8-2 and competing for its first-ever playoff birth!
Join us on Saturday, Nov. 8, as the Warriors take on the nation's top-ranked Grand Valley State.
The free alumni association's indoor tailgate will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Wayne State Matthaei Athletic Complex, Hall of Fame Room. Students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors and guests are invited to enjoy the pregame festivities, including coffee, cider and pastries; tailgate games and prizes; and a special visit by the Wayne State cheerleaders and mascot.
Then stay for the game. Kickoff is at noon at Adams Field. Game tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for children and $5 for alumni association members.

Wind down after work with A Holiday Brunch with Giulio Live! on Thursday, Nov. 20.
Watch and learn as Giulio Fattore, campus executive chef for AVI Fresh, whips up a variety of culinary masterpieces, then sample some of his creations. Make the season bright with a wedge salad with blue cheese dressing, tomato, cucumber and onion; banana nut stuffed French toast with vanilla crème anglaise; and eggs benedict with turkey sausage, tomato, spinach and herbed hollandaise sauce. You’ll receive copies of Giulio’s secret recipes, along with a special gift compliments of the alumni association and AVI Fresh.

Submit Nominations for Alumni Awards The alumni association is accepting nominations for several awards:
The Distinguished Alumni Award, presented to alumni who meet one or more of the following criteria: outstanding service to the community for over a period of years; personal accomplishments that enhance the prestige of Wayne State; distinguished service or accomplishment in any field of human endeavor; singular contributions to the development of the cultural or spiritual life of any community.
The Homer D. Strong Award, presented for distinguished leadership and service to the alumni associaiton and the university, for stimulating alumni participation and benefiting the university through volunteer leadership.
The Recent Alumni Award, which recognizes an individual who demonstrates outstanding professional achievement, community contributions or service to the university, and has received a bachelor's degree or certificate in the past 10 years.
The Faculty Service Award, presented to Wayne State faculty whose professional or civic efforts have brought about a greater appreciation of the university's contributions to community service.

Legislative Advocacy Program and Video Win Awards
The alumni association's legislative advocacy program was honored with a gold award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education district V.
The program, which received an award for Best Volunteer Engagement, asks alumni and friends of the university to advocate the views and positions of Wayne State to their elected officials.
Also, the alumni association received a bronze award from CASE V for Best Video Feature. The video, entitled Wayne Walking, was made last fall using man-on-the-street interviews. It was filmed and edited entirely by the alumni association staff.

Music Department Hosts Piano Sale
Wayne State’s Department of Music will host a piano sale Nov. 14-16.
For the past academic year, the music department has had the benefit of using new pianos from the Kawai Piano Company through a mutually beneficial loan program. These quality pianos are now available to you for a fraction of the retail price. The pianos have been professionally maintained and will include a full factory warranty and in-home tuning provided by the Kawai Company's local agent, Evola Music.
The piano sale will take place Nov. 14-16 at Wayne State's Oakland Center, located at 33737 W. 12 Mile Road.
As a member of the Wayne State community, you have the opportunity to preview and purchase pianos before the general public.

Enjoy Turkey Day Parade With Alumni and Friends Wayne State’s Bonstelle Theatre will become the place to be during the famous America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and first-ever alumni association hospitality event, on Thursday, Nov. 27.
When you need to take a break from your favorite place along the parade route, enjoy warm drinks, family-friendly activities and a clean restroom at the Bonstelle.
The event begins at 8 a.m. and is free for alumni association members and children under 13. Cost is $5 for non-members.

IITC Presents Lecture
Wayne State’s Institute of Information Technology and Culture will present a lecture as part of the organization's lecture series highlighting anthropology entitled “Dangerous Territory: Social Research Out of Bounds” on Friday, Nov. 14.
The lecture will feature Richard Sheridan, CEO of Menlo Innovations, will discuss Menlo's unique approach to software innovation using a design practice that takes an anthropological approach and an energized work environment created in the spirit of Edison's Menlo Park "Invention Factory."
The event begins at 3 p.m. at the NextEnergy Auditorium in TechTown, Wayne State research and technology park.

Join the Hilberry Click Today
In support of Wayne State's campus-wide initiative to protect the environment, the Hilberry Theatre Company is launching the Hilberry Click, a new way for the company to stay connected to its audience members.
More than 175,000 pieces of paper are sent to patrons each year in the form of postcards, brochures and season calendars. In order to reduce paper waste, the Hilberry will offer Click, an e-mail alternative, that will provide patrons with information on upcoming shows, special events and exclusive discounts for Click members.
Click is just a small component of Wayne State's recycling program. In 2006, Wayne State put into action an environmental task force, which focuses on energy conservation, sustainability and a campus-wide recycling program.

Grammy Winner Visits Campus
Renowned conductor and multiple-Grammy winner Erich Kunzel will speak to Wayne State Department of Music students and the campus community about his career on Friday, Nov. 14.
The presentation begins at 1 p.m. in the Schaver Music Recital Hall in Old Main. The event is free and open to the public.
Kunzel will be in Detroit to conduct the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Pop Series "Classic Broadway" Nov. 13-16 at Orchestra Hall. The WSU Symphonic Chorus, conducted by Dr. Norah Duncan IV, will perform with the DSO in the series.
