Alumni Lecture Features Leonard Slatkin

Save the date for the Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Lecture Series featuring Leonard Slatkin on Tuesday, March 24.

Slatkin, music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, is an internationally renowned American conductor who has made appearances with virtually every major international orchestra. His recordings have garnered seven Grammy awards and more than 60 nominations.

The Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Lecture Series began in 1992, and was named by the alumni association in 1995 to honor civil rights leader Dr. Arthur L. Johnson upon his retirement as vice president for university relations at Wayne State University. The series offers an opportunity to hear thoughtful and interesting commentaries on a wide range of subjects such as politics, business, economics, law and the arts.

The lecture begins at noon in Alumni House. It is free and open to the public.

An Evening With David Sedaris

Join WDET for an evening of laughs with author and humorist David Sedaris on Tuesday, April 21.

Sedaris will be reading from his latest book, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, as well as exclusive, unpublished works about his life and family.

Get Cooking With Giulio Live!

Our favorite chef, Giulio Fattore, is back for another round of the wildly popular Giulio Live! cooking series on Wednesday, March 18.

Watch and learn (and eat!) as Giulio, campus executive chef for AVI Fresh, prepares a four-course Italian meal featuring roasted melon and proscuitto salad with arugala, olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette; chicken tosco with lemon caper sauce; homemade pastas; and tiramisu. Bring a bottle of your favorite wine.

You’ll be seated up close and personal with Giulio, and you’ll have the chance to make your own pasta. You’ll get a copy of Giulio’s secret recipe and a gift.

Be a Part of Scholars Day

Help the Irvin D. Reid Honors College recruit its next freshman class by taking part in Wayne Scholars Day. Alumni volunteers are needed to interview potential scholarship applicants on the following days:
 
9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7
9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8
9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14
9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15
 
During Scholars Day, the university invites promising first-year applicants and their parents to campus for a day of interviews, presentations, tours, and lunch. Every student who attends receives a scholarship of $1,500 a year for four years. Based on the results of an interview, review of a writing sample, and consideration of grade-point average and test scores, some students will receive increased scholarship offers, up to and including four-year, full-tuition Presidential Scholarships.

The interviews include four to six students and two interviewers. Interviews are held on campus, and take approximately 45 minutes each. Volunteers receive a small gift of appreciation and are encouraged to join the students for lunch.

Women of Wayne Hosts Fashion Show

The Grosse Pointe chapter of Women of Wayne will host its annual fashion show and luncheon on Saturday, March 14.

Enjoy complimentary mimosas and a silent auction. Lunch will be served at noon and is followed by the fashion show featuring fashions by Coldwater Creek.

The event begins at 11 a.m. at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. Cost is $30 per person. Reservations are required by March 6.

Hilberry Hosts Alumni Event

Did you hear? Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead! Find out what this means during a special reception and performance of Tom Stoppard’s play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, on Thursday, Feb. 26.

The play, performed by Wayne State's Hilberry Repertory Company, features the minor characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet tragedy.

Before the curtain rises, stop by the “spirited” coffee bar (emphasis on bar) for drinks and desserts. Blair Anderson, Ph.D., department chair and director of this season’s Hamlet, will stop by and offer remarks.

As a special bonus, we’ve arranged for a discount on dinner that night at three area restaurants: Union Street (20 percent discount), Atlas Global Bistro (15 percent discount) and Traffic Jam (10 percent discount).

CareerBoost: Leaders on Leadership

Attend CareerBoost: Case Studies from the television series Leaders on Leadership - it’s a tough world out there! on Wednesday, April 1.

This interactive event, presented by Larry Fobes, host of the Emmy Award-winning television show Leaders on Leadership, calls on the expertise of former guests. Watch clips of past guests, such as Paul O’Neill, former secretary of treasury; Dieter Zetsche, former president and CEO of Chrysler; and Alfred Taubman, founder of the Taubman Co. and former chair of Sotheby’s, then explore a variety of related leadership issues in the context of your own career.

The event, sponsored by the alumni association, School of Business Administration, WTVS-TV (channel 56) and Greenleaf Trust, begins at 5:30 p.m. at Alumni House.

Cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Free for currently enrolled WSU students.

CLAS Goes to the DIA

Join the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Alumni Association for a night at the Detroit Institute of Arts on Friday, March 13.

The event begins at 6 p.m. Cost is $40 per person.

Admission price includes access to the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Norman Rockwell Exhibit and a $20 DIA gift certificate, which can be used at the Café DIA, Kresge Court Coffee Shop or the DIA Gift Shop. Join fellow alumni for a private gathering in Café DIA or tour the museum at your own pace. Proceeds from the event will support the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.

Don't Miss 3rd Annual Hockey Night

Join Wayne State alumni, students and friends for the Athletic Alumni Association's third annual Doc Andrews Alumni Hockey Night on Friday, Feb. 27.

A pre-game reception at Z's Villa (42 Piquette St., Detroit) will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the Wayne State women's hockey game against the Mercyhurst Lakers at 7:05 p.m.

Cost is $15 for members, $12 for non-members and $10 for currently enrolled Wayne State students. Cost includes appetizers, beer, shuttle service to and from the game and game ticket. All proceeds to support the Doc Andrews Scholarship Fund.

College of Nursing Research Day

The College of Nursing will host Research Day 2009 on Wednesday, March 25.

Dr. Suzanne Bakken, alumni professor of nursing and professor of biomedical informatics at Columbia University, will deliver the keynote address at noon at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center.

A poster reception will highlight the research of Wayne State College of Nursing faculty, graduate students and clinical partners.

OBA Presents Black Poetry

The Organization of Black Alumni presents Black Poetry, a theatrical performance about life presented through poetry, song and dance, on Saturday, Feb. 21.

There are two performances: 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the General Lectures building on campus.

Cost is $20 per person. Currently enrolled Wayne State students can purchase tickets at the door for $10.

School of Medicine Advocacy Training

Join the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the School of Medicine Alumni Association for an advocacy training session on Thursday, Feb. 26.

As Wayne State continues to receive diminished funding from the State of Michigan, it has become critical for alumni to convey the importance of the university to elected officials. Join administrators from the School of Medicine as they discuss current issues impacting the university and how alumni can provide support for grassroots advocacy.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Westin Hotel in Southfield (1500 Town Center). The session is free and open to the public; however, be advised that the training will focus only on legislative issues impacting the School of Medicine.

Democracy in the Obama Era Lecture

Attend the Robert L. and Louise Millender memorial lecture, Democracy in the Obama Era: Race and the Millennial Generation, on Thursday, Feb. 19.

The lecture will feature guest speaker Farai Chideya of National Public Radio. Chideya will discuss the ways in which Barack Obama's election as the 44th U.S. president has influenced the public discourse. She will discuss divergences in the way millennial and older voters tend to view racial identity and politics and explore America's transformation into a majority minority nation.

The lecture begins at 3 p.m. at the Community Arts Auditorium (WSU). It is free and open to the public.

Volunteer at Grad Expo

Be a part of Grad Expo! Volunteers are needed to recruit new grads to join the alumni association.

You'll have a chance to meet some of the graduates who will walk during the May commencement ceremonies and tell them about alumni association membership benefits. Students attend Grad Expo to pick up their caps, gowns and commencement tickets, as well as buy class rings, diploma frames and other merchandise.

Grad Expo will take place in the Welcome Center, at Warren and Woodward, from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, and Thursday, April 16, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. April 17. Alumni volunteers should specify their preferred shift. They'll also receive a special alumni association sweatshirt and free parking in the Welcome Center structure at Cass and Putnam.

Experience Spatial Effects

The Elaine L. Jacob Gallery presents Spatial Effects: New Digital Art through April 3.

Curated by Bang Geul Han, assistant professor of digital arts at Wayne State, Spatial Effects presents six artists: printmaker Joseph Sheer, digital artist Sabrina Raaf, media artist Fabian Winkler, media artist Daniel Sauter, digital artist Tiffany Sum, and media artist Robert Ransick. Each artist incorporates new technologies and digital working strategies within their artistic production.

The exhibit is open to the public 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday.

Attend a TV Taping at WTVS

Come on down to WTVS-TV (channel 56) for a live taping of the Emmy Award-winning Leaders on Leadership television series.

The show, co-produced by the Wayne State School of Business Administration and Detroit Public Television, features key executives from the corporate world. Be a part of the studio audience, submit a question that you can ask on air, and take part in an off-the-air dialogue with the guest speaker.

See the Premiere of Suite Justice

Wayne State University Big Band and Concert Chorale will perform the world premiere of Suite Justice, an original jazz composition by Wayne State Professor Russell Miller, on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Suite Justice includes eight pieces representing each of the beatitudes from Matthew (5: 3-10).

Russell Miller teaches jazz improvisation, jazz bands, and arranging and orchestration classes at Wayne State. His 30-year music career includes performing with Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy DeFranco, Rosemary Clooney and Sammy Davis Jr.

The event begins at 4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington, 26165 Farmington Rd. Reservations are not required. Donations will be accepted at the door (suggestion: $10 per person, $25 per family). All donations support the Wayne State music program.
