Mark your calendars for Wayne State's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute luncheon. This year's featured speaker is renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Benjamin Carson, M.D., a Detroit native and professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 2008, he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. During the luncheon, Crossroads Michigan and Tyree Guyton, winners of the 2010 Community Leadership Awards, also will be celebrated.

Cost is $65 for lunch and the program. Tickets for the program only are $10. Proceeds will support Adopt-a-Classroom, a nationally recognized organization that invites the community into classrooms to increase opportunities for student success by empowering teachers with community partnerships and funds to purchase resources for their classrooms.

The alumni association presents the Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Lecture Series featuring Robert C. Bobb, emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools. His work experience includes president of the Washington, D.C., Board of Education; city administrator and being deputy mayor for Washington D.C.; District of Columbia homeland security advisor; and city manager for Richmond, Va., Santa Ana, Calif., and Kalamazoo, Mich. He is an expert on issues facing urban government in the areas of education, economic development, community and neighborhood development, and municipal budgeting and finance. The lecture is free, but reservations are encouraged. Visitor parking is available in structure 1 located on the northwest corner of Palmer Street and Cass Avenue. $4.25 exact change is required.
